SUMMARY:2023 CCUS TEA/LCA Workshop
DESCRIPTION:​We are excited to announce that the Global CO2 Initiative will host the 2023 TEA/LCA Workshop on Harmonizing CCUS Assessments on May 16-18 this year! This fifth workshop in the series is planned and conducted by the International CCUS Assessment Harmonization Group with members from the USA (GCI at U-M\, NETL\, NREL\, ANL)\, Canada (NRC)\, Germany (RIFS\, formerly known as IASS)\, Switzerland (ETH Zürich)\, and Japan (NIAIST). We are looking forward to one-and-a-half days of intense dialog and work that will advance transparent and uniform assessments of CCUS technologies and products. \nThis year’s workshop will focus on the inclusion of social factors in life cycle assessments and techno-economic assessments\, as well as next steps towards guidance through international standardization of assessment guidelines. \nThe workshop will be conducted in-person at the Rackham Graduate School at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. Online participation will be available. \nRegister for in person attendance here.We will host a poster session for student and postdoc presenters to specifically invite them to engage with the assessment community. \nWho should attend?Researchers\, students\, practitioners\, developers and users of LCA and TEA for CCUS and users of assessment outputs. DESCRIPTION:On the 20ᵗʰ of April\, the European Climate\, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) and the European Commission’s DG Climate Action are organising an info day to present the third Innovation Fund small-scale call for projects. This new call will be launched on 30 March 2023 with a budget of EUR 100 million for projects with total capital costs between EUR 2.5 million and below EUR 7.5 million. \nDuring the online event\, participants will get an overview of the new call and will have the opportunity to get practical tips to succeed in their application. The Info Day will be interactive\, and participants will be able to ask questions and contribute to the event via sli.do (#IFSSC2022). \nThe Innovation Fund is a dedicated funding programme for the deployment and up-scaling of innovative low-carbon technologies\, aiming to bring industrial solutions to decarbonise Europe to the market. DESCRIPTION:📢 On 13th of April\, the Maison Irène et Frédéric Joliot Curie in Brussels hosted an in-person event organized by CEA titled “Sustainable and low carbon fuels and chemicals – Time for take-off”. \n🌱⛽ Sustainable and low carbon fuels will play an essential role in achieving the European Union’s ambitious energy transition objectives and reaching net zero by 2050. In particular\, they will allow the defossilisation of industry sectors where electrification alone will not be sufficient. \n🏛️ Speakers and representatives from the European Commission and European organizations\, from more than 10 Member States\, from industry and from the research community joined the event to discuss around the currently hot topic of sustainable low carbon fuels and chemicals and the challenges ahead. \n👥 There was a great interest in attending the event\, with more than 110 registrations. DESCRIPTION:📅 Last 28th of March\, the Alliance Nationale de Coordination de la Recherche pour l’Energie (ANCRE) and SUNER-C co-organized an online event titled “Séminaire ANCRE-SUNER-C: comment promouvoir la filière des carburants et molécules de commodité alternatifs en France et en Europe?” \n🌍 The event brought together French stakeholders from the SUNERGY community and beyond to inform\, involve\, and mobilize the French research community on the ongoing SUNER-C project. Approximately 80 people registered for the event. \n🎤 The event began with introductory words by the current head of the ANCRE Alliance\, Pierre-Franck Chevet (chairman and CEA of IFP Energies nouvelles)\, followed by Frederic Chandezon\, deputy coordinator of SUNERGY and SUNER-C\, presented the initiative and project and explained how attendees can contribute to shape a future around solar fuels and chemicals in the European agendas. Two representatives from the French Ministry of Research and Higher Education\, Annabelle Rondaud and Xavier Montagne\, also gave insight into the topic and how SUNERGY contributed and can contribute. \n🔬 The event continued with seven scientific and technical presentations to share their vision and the current challenges they identify in the field of solar fuels and chemicals and Carbon Capture and Use. These were presented by representatives of French academias\, RTOs and networks (Centre national de la recherche scientifique\, Commissariat a l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives\, IFP Energies nouvelles\, Université Grenoble Alpes)\, networks and Hubs (GDR Solar Fuels funded by CNRS and AXELERA Auvergne-Rhône Alpes Chemistry-Environnment Hub) and industrials (ENGIE\, VICAT). \n👏 As concluding messages\, representatives of ANCRE\, the French Ministry of Research and Higher Education\, and SUNERGY/SUNER-C emphasized the diversity and dynamism of the French community and eco-system in the field of solar fuels and chemicals and CCU\, and the importance of the field in pushing it further in the European agendas. \n🌟 Overall\, the event was a great success\, providing valuable insights into the current state of solar fuels and chemicals in France and Europe and showcasing the importance of collaboration and community involvement in driving progress in the field. \n  \nThe event was part of the pan-European initiative SUNERGY\, working to enable a circular economy through the sustainable production of fossil-free fuels and base chemicals from renewable energy (sunlight\, wind) and abundant molecules (CO2\, water\, nitrogen). SUNER-C is a new EU-funded CSA (Coordination and Support Action) under the umbrella of the SUNERGY Community\, with 4M € funding for 3 years from June 1st 2022. SUNER-C will enable the creation of an innovation ecosystem\, develop a technological roadmap and prepare for a large-scale research and innovation (R&I) initiative on solar fuels and chemicals. Ultimately\, SUNERGY aims to become a large European Research and Innovation (LSRI) initiative working towards converting and storing renewable energy into fossil-free fuels and chemicals\, complementing the scope of existing European partnerships. \nThe meeting was free of charge.\nThe main language of the event was French. \nProgram

SUMMARY:The Future of Energy Materials: EERA EM4I & AMI2030 Joint Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The EERA Energy Materials for Innovation (EM4I) initiative timely reflected on the importance of bringing materials science to the forefront of Europe’s energy research landscape if we are to achieve the net-zero objective. In parallel\, the Advanced Materials 2030 Initiative (AMI2030) has been later working at a roadmap and is now working at a governance plan and a Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) for advanced materials in Horizon Europe. Given the common objective of ensuring that materials research is addressed in Europe in a comprehensive and consistent way to promote innovation in several fields (including energy)\, EERA EM4I and AMI2030 are jointly organising an online workshop to be held on 13 and 14 March\, 2023. \nIn this workshop: \n\nThe key outcomes of the EERA EM4I initiative will be presented;\nThe strategies of relevance in the context of materials science of some EERA joint programmes – Advanced Materials and Processing for Energy Applications (AMPEA)\, Nuclear Materials with the relevant European partnership (ORIENT-NM project)\, and E3S (Economic\, Environmental and Social Impacts of the Energy Transition)- will be analysed;\nThe AMI2030 framework and the relevant actions identified by its working groups will be brought to light; and\nThe integration of existing partnerships (clean energy transition\, hydrogen\, batteries\, …) and other initiatives (e.g.\, in the solar energy field) with the above strategies and actions will be explored.\n\nThe workshop is free of charge and open to all upon registration in here.

SUMMARY:LCA to CCUS & Alternative Fuels (AF) workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) & Alternative Fuels (AF) online workshop will take place on the 15-16th of December. \nCCUS & AF have a significant potential to achieve important societal goals such as mitigating GHG emissions or even reaching negative GHG emissions. To demonstrate that emerging CCUS & AF technologies could contribute to obtaining such goals\, LCA has become the more widely accepted methodology. \nThe workshop involves a parallel session on MIRO (an online collaborative whiteboard platform) where the major issues emerging in LCA of CCUS will be discussed and possible solutions will be proposed. SUMMARY:European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) Fall Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 E-MRS Fall Meeting and Exhibit was held in Warsaw University of Technology\, from September 19 to 21 (exhibition) and September 19 to 22 (technical sessions).
