The European Innovation Council operates at the forefront of scientific and technological developments. This ambition is underlined by the EIC Tech Report 2023 which highlights novel technologies and innovations submitted to the EIC under Horizon Europe. The report has an emphasis on early-stage research projects, funded following extensive independent expert review. It also includes some areas of technology that have attracted high quality proposals, but that are not funded to date by the EIC. It relies on a range of inputs and the views and insights of EIC Programme Managers and covers a wide range of topics: digital technologies, industry and space, cleantech and health.

The analysis shared in the report will help inform future explorations of the EIC portfolio, mapping internal EIC data to global trends based on patents, publications, funding and investments.

This European Commission funded study provides a technoeconomic analysis of global solar fuel value chains and pathways for sustainable implementation, including: a techno-economic analysis of worldwide solar fuel value chains; a technological development roadmap for 2030 and 2050 and economic roadmap to 2100 as well as a market outlook mapping the full potential of solar fuels for 2050 and 2100; the International Solar Fuels Forum; and the organisation of an international conference on solar fuels.

SUNRISE Technological Roadmap

The SUNRISE technological roadmap is the result of the integrated knowledge of a broad group of scientists across Europe and a key step to engage the whole community towards building a climate neutral EU. This roadmapping process started in May 2019 based on the development of a consolidated SUNRISE vision of a circular solar-driven economy for 2050. It spread during SUNRISE CSA and has been later tackled by a dedicated working group within the SUNRISE consortium.

A Hydrogen Strategy for a Climate-Neutral Europe

The European Commission has presented its Hydrogen Strategy, an strategic roadmap that provides a concrete policy framework within which the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance – building on the success of the European Battery Alliance – a collaboration between public authorities, industry and civil society, formally launched today, will develop an investment agenda and a pipeline of concrete projects. It complements the Strategy for Energy System Integration, presented at the same time, which describes how the ongoing work streams of EU energy policy, including hydrogen development, will foster a climate neutral integrated energy system with renewable electricity, circularity and renewable and low-carbon fuels at its core. Both strategies contribute towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

In the first phase, from 2020 up to 2024, the strategic objective is to install at least 6 GW of renewable hydrogen electrolysers in the EU and the production of up to 1 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen, to decarbonise existing hydrogen production, e.g. in the chemical sector and facilitating take up of hydrogen consumption in new end-use applications such as other industrial processes and possibly in heavy-duty transport.

In a second phase, from 2025 to 2030, hydrogen needs to become an intrinsic part of an integrated energy system with a strategic objective to install at least 40 GW of renewable hydrogen electrolysers by 2030 and the production of up to 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen in the EU.

In a third phase, from 2030 onwards and towards 2050, renewable hydrogen technologies should reach maturity and be deployed at large scale to reach all hard-todecarbonise sectors where other alternatives might not be feasible or have higher costs.

German National Hydrogen Strategy

The Federal Government has adopted a National Hydrogen Strategy for Germany. Hydrogen is identified as a key tool for decarbonizing key German sectors such as the steel and chemical industries and the transport sector. Furthermore, hydrogen technologies are recognized the potential to become a key field of business for German exporters.

In this context, the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers has released the “Helmholtz Competence Atlas Hydrogen” where a selection of their activities in hydrogen research is presented.
