On the 7th and 8th of March 2024, our 4th SUNER-C Consortium Meeting took place in Utrecht, gathering over 50 participants representing the partner organizations of the project. The attendees engaged in discussions, shared insights, and collectively contributed to shaping the trajectory of the SUNER-C project.

The first day began with a warm welcome from the SUNER-C Coordinator and Professor, Bert Weckhuysen, at the Speelklok Museum. Following that, Nathan Coutard, SUNER-C Project Manager, presented some context around a funding opportunity: the EIC Solar-to-X Pathfinder Challenge. The first part of the meeting ended with the WP updates and preparing for working sessions of day 2.

SUNER-C partners had the privilege to host Philippe Jacques (EMIRI/Syensqo), Managing Director of the Energy Materials Industrial Research Initiative (EMIRI) and SUNER-C International Advisory Board Member, sharing insights about the path to a successful partnership, and discussing the experience of the “Innovative Materials for EU” (proposed public-private partnership under Horizon Europe, starting in 2025).

During the presentation, Dr. Jacques shared insights into EMIRI’s journey towards a partnership, which began in 2012 with self-funded efforts. Key highlights included a Manifesto in 2021, signed by industry and RTOs, the involvement in the Batteries European Partnership Association and crucial support from the European Commission. He also emphasized as a key strategy for collective advancement the importance of industry-relevant KPIs for advocacy, having a clear positioning, creating a strong community engagement and continuously collaborating with other initiatives. In addition, Philippe Jacques emphasized that all this requires a long lasting effort – therefore, it’s key to build on SUNERGY work so far to develop the community further, towards a possible future partnership or another large scale initiative.

The day concluded with an enlightening presentation by Katrin Arning, Assistant Professor for Risk Perception and Communication at RWTH Aachen University and SUNER-C International Advisory Board Member, presenting “Sunlight and Shadows: Risk perception, acceptance, and communication of Sustainable Aviation Fuels”. Prof. Arning discussed societal acceptance, highlighting its different dimensions and the crucial role of understanding four key aspects of risk perception: subjectivity, interpersonal differences, complexity, and context specificity. To assess risk perception effectively, a comprehensive measurement framework involving both qualitative and quantitative methods is necessary. Shockingly, only a small percentage of respondents are aware of CCUS, leading to inadequate understanding and overestimation of risks among the public.

The second day took place at Utrecht University, with discussions focusing on the progress of specific project topics and planned future actions. SUNER-C partners also visited laboratories showcasing the research happening at Utrecht University.

https://sunergy-initiative.eu/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/lv_0_20240308114206.mp4

The consortium meeting concluded with a conversation on societal and cross-cutting issues in sustainable fuels & chemicals technology groups, moderated and organized by Dr. Kasper Ampe (Ghent University), Prof. Dr. Joeri Wesseling (Utrecht University) and Tycho van Hauwaert (Flemish Environmental Movement). The panel included Joanna Kargul, Professor at Warsaw University (WU), Han Huynh, CCUS Domain Manager at ENGIE, Joachim John, Senior Project Manager at imec, Ann Magnuson, Professor at Uppsala University (UppU), and Martin Roeb, Scientist at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and SUNER-C International Advisory Board Member.

The discussion focused on the (renewable) energy, critical raw materials and carbon required to produce sustainable fuels, the proposed technologies and their relation to the energy system, the place where sustainable fuels are produced, who gets to use sustainable fuels and who decides what when and how about sustainable fuels technology development.

We’re grateful for the engaging discussions, valuable insights, and collaborative spirit that marked the 4th SUNER-C Consortium Meeting. Looking forward to implementing the ideas and strategies discussed during the meeting as we continue to drive innovation in the field of sustainable fuels and chemicals.

The conference Decarbonisation of Energy Intensive Industries: Challenges, Opportunities and Solutions took place from 10 to 11 November 2022 at Hotel STAGES in Prague as a part of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The conference was intended for representatives of energy intensive companies, policymakers and experts to examine the policy framework necessary to meet EU’s goal of becoming the first climate-neutral continent by 2050.

The debate also centred in sustainable and feasible options for decarbonisation and green transition, e.g. using CO2 exhausts as input raw material for synthetic fuels and chemicals for industrial applications. In this context, SUNERGY Coordinator Prof. Bert Weckhuysen and deputy coordinator Dr. Frédéeric Chandezon, presented SUNER-C project (CSA, GA nr. 101058481). The aim was to present the SUNERGY vision on present and future solutions to reduce CO2 emissions in front of the european industrial and societal stakeholders.

SUNERGY aims to transform abundantly available feedstock molecules, mainly CO2, H2O, and N2, with solar energy into sustainable fuels, materials, and chemicals. These so-called solar fuels and chemicals are analogous to their fossil counterparts and can be incorporated into the existing energy value chains with minimal adjustments to the existing infrastructure. The European Union is clear to stay on a steady path to climate neutrality through its plan against greenhouse emissions, the ‘Fit for 55’ package and the EU Green Deal. Unless deep cuts are made in carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas emissions, it will be very challenging to reach that goal. For this reason, SUNERGY Community approaches to use energy carriers to supplement renewable energy based on photovoltaics and wind energy to supply fuels to sectors and processes difficult to electrify and to create non-fossil carbon feedstock for the chemical industry.

The Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS) was published by the European Commission on 14 October 2020 as EU’s zero pollution ambition within the EU Green Deal. The EU already has sophisticated chemicals laws in place, but global chemicals production is expected to double by 2030. In this context, the CSS announces a Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda in 2022, from which a Strategic Research and Innovation Plan (SRIP) has been delivered.

The SRIP highlights current research and innovation areas crucial for accelerating the transition to chemicals and materials that are safe and sustainable, from production to (re)use, disposal and pollution remediation. This document is the result of extensive consultations with expert groups. The aim is to guide R&I stakeholders in their decisions on investments across the EU, national and private funding programmes and inviting them to contribute to its implementation. In addition, the SRIP will be used in Horizon Europe overarching strategy.

Prof. Weckhuysen explains that the supply and demand of renewable energy often do not match – for example, there is not enough power from the solar panels in the winter, while the heat pumps, stoves and infrared heaters have to run then. Artificial photosynthesis offers an alternative, by directly storing the energy from sunlight in known fuels such as methane, petrol and kerosene, of which the emitted carbon dioxide can be reused.

How can we achieve the EU’s goal of becoming the first climate-neutral continent by 2050? Last 27th and 28th of September, 30 different EU partners gathered together to kick off SUNER-C, the EU-funded project (4M € over 3 years) on the next generation of energy carriers to replace fossil-fuels. The main objective is to build an ecosystem of companies, researchers, societal actors and policymakers, to accelerate the transition of technologies for the generation of solar fuels and chemicals, from the laboratory to large-scale industrial applications.

The European Union is clear to stay on a steady path to climate neutrality through its plan against greenhouse emissions, the ‘Fit for 55’ package, with the EU Green Deal as a blueprint. Unless deep cuts are made in carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas emissions, it will be very challenging to reach that goal. Renewable energy based on photovoltaics and wind energy needs to be supplemented with energy carriers to supply fuels to sectors and processes difficult to electrify and to create non-fossil carbon feedstock for the chemical industry. These so-called solar fuels and chemicals are most often analogous to their fossil counterparts and can be incorporated into the existing energy value chains with minimal adjustments to the existing infrastructure. These fuels are based on the transformation of abundant compounds, such as carbon dioxide, water and nitrogen, into synthetic fuels, chemicals and materials by using renewable energy.

The deputy coordinator of the project, Dr. Frédéric Chandezon, European policy officer at IRIG institute (CEA Grenoble), stated:

“The SUNER-C European project will be the cornerstone to implement and validate the concept of an action coordinated at a European scale to accelerate the development of solar fuels and chemicals as a ramp-up phase from 2022 to 2025, and prepare the path to a large scale R&I initiative after 2025. As the contribution of the community is essential, many actions of the project will be done together with all stakeholders and with the European Commission and the Member States during the 3 years that the project will last.”

The SUNER-C consortium is a unique and balanced eco-system of 31 organisations, consisting of 13 academic partners, 13 industrial companies, 4 network federations, and 1 Non-Governmental Organisation. All representatives met last 27th and 28th of September in Brussels for the official launch of SUNER-C, which started on 1st June 2022. The aim of the kick-off meeting was the review, implementation, and update of the work plan set. Besides, it was a great opportunity for all partners to meet in person, network with colleagues, and work together to maximize the impact of the project. During the first day, SUNER-C work plan was reviewed through the presentation of each work package, guided by the leader and co-leaders of the working groups. Essentially, the SUNER-C consortium will work on the development of a strategic roadmap towards the broad implementation of solar fuels and chemicals, and supporting strategies for innovation and exploitation, with a firm focus on cross-cutting and socio-technical aspects. As Prof. Maximilian Fleischer, Chief Key Expert at Siemens Energy, commented:

“Research is the transformation of money to knowledge, on the other hand, Innovation is the transformation of knowledge to money. Research is necessary but not a sufficient condition for innovation, thus our endeavor must lead to R&I in scalable technologies that are accepted by society and by investors, creating economic and environmental value”

Furthermore, the roundtables facilitated communication at national/regional and expertise/sector levels. Through a holistic approach, SUNER-C will contribute to a circular economy by replacing fossil-derived fuels and chemicals with renewables and carbon recycling as a key element toward the EU net-zero emissions target by 2050.

The overarching objective of the SUNER-C project is to create an inclusive innovation community and ecosystem that builds on the current SUNERGY network and includes new stakeholders across Europe. This new action will be key for bringing together fundamental and applied knowledge from various sectors of the society, as well as often unique resources, on the road to prepare a large-scale European joint action. The goal is to overcome scientific, technological, organizational and socio-economic challenges, accelerate innovation in solar fuels and chemicals, and enable the transition of existing and future technologies from laboratory and demonstrator level to industrial-scale application.
