With a budget of around €95.5 billion for 2021-2027, the European Research and Innovation (R&I) framework is getting ready to see the light this spring, for the next 7 years. The programme will include funds from the NextGenerationEU (€5.4 billion) to boost recovery and resilience.
The main novelties of the coming programme include the new EIC (European Innovation Council) and the European Missions.
The EIC, together with the EIT (European Institute of Innovation & Technology), will support top-class innovators, entrepreneurs, small companies and scientists with bright ideas and the ambition to scale up internationally.
European Missions aim to solve some of the greatest challenges facing our world, divided in 5 main areas:
In addition, the programme will also reshape the European partnerships bringing the European Commission and private and/or public partners together to address some of Europe’s most pressing challenges through concerted research and innovation initiatives.
Horizon Europe will keep promoting excellence through the European Research Council (ERC) and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowships, together with Joint Research Centres (JRC), the Commission’s science and knowledge service. The programme will also support collaborative research through thematic clusters that address the full spectrum of global challenges. For example, Horizon Europe’s Climate Energy and Mobility cluster and the Digital Industry and Space cluster will scale up R&I resources in climate-related domains, in fact, 35 % of the programme’s budget will be dedicated to climate change related topics.
